How to use the Amazon Referral Fee Calculator
- Open “Category” and choose the category that matches your item. The list has 38 categories, and the default is Toys and Games. Pet Supplies is split into “Pet Supplies” at 15% and “Pet Supplies, veterinary diets” at 22%.
- Enter your selling price in “Item price ($)”.
- Enter what you paid for the item in “Item cost ($)”.
- Open More options. If you charge shipping, enter it in “Shipping the buyer pays ($)”. The total price is the item price plus this shipping charge, and gift wrap counts too if you add it to shipping.
- Enter “Your shipping cost ($)” and “Other costs per order ($)” if they apply.
- Set “Number of orders” to the number of orders you expect.
- Choose a “Selling plan”. On Professional, set “Items sold per month” (default 100), because the monthly plan fee is divided across those items.
- Leave “Referral fee (%), override” and “Minimum referral fee ($), override” blank to use the category table. Fill them in only to replace the table’s figures.
- Read the output rows, from “Profit per order” and “Platform pays out” to “Referral fee”, “Closing fee (media)”, “Selling plan fee per item”, “Total fees”, “Margin on sale”, “ROI on cost”, “Effective fee rate”, “Break-even price” and “Profit for all orders”, then any warnings.
The boxes “Individual plan, per item ($)” and “Professional plan, per month ($)” are pre-filled with 0.99 and 39.99. The presets “Toys, $40”, “Clothing, $18”, “Book, $12”, “Jewelry, $400”, “Baby, $9” and “Individual plan” fill in common setups.
How is the Amazon referral fee calculated?
The referral fee is a percentage of the total price, or the category’s minimum referral fee, whichever is greater. The total price is the item price plus the shipping charge you collect from the buyer, plus gift wrap if you add it to shipping.
What is the Amazon referral fee minimum?
Most categories have a minimum referral fee of $0.30. Gift Cards, Grocery and Gourmet, Media, Video Games, and Video Game Consoles have no minimum. Fine Art uses $1.00. The page’s minimum column shows “–” for Fine Art, but the first tier is worded with a $1.00 minimum, so this tool uses $1.00 and shows a warning. Check the platform’s page before you rely on it.
Why does the rate change with the price in some categories?
The category table uses two patterns. Band rows, such as Jewelry, apply each rate only to the part of the price inside its band. A $400 Jewelry item is 20% of the first $250 plus 5% of the next $150, which is $50 + $7.50 = $57.50.
Threshold rows, such as Clothing and Accessories, use one rate for the whole price, chosen by the price range. Clothing is 5% up to $15, 10% above $15 up to $20, and 17% above $20. The page does not state explicitly that a single rate covers the whole price for Baby, Beauty, Health and Personal Care, Clothing and Accessories, and Grocery and Gourmet. This is our reading of the wording, and the tool warns you about it.
How do closing fees and selling plan fees add up?
Media categories (Books, DVD, Music, Software, Video) add a $1.80 closing fee per item on top of the 15% referral fee. The Individual plan adds $0.99 per item. The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month, divided by “Items sold per month”. At the default of 100 items, that is $0.40 per item.
For example, a $12 book on the Individual plan has a referral fee of $1.80, a closing fee of $1.80, and a plan fee of $0.99, a total of $4.59. With a $2 item cost, profit is $5.41.
What do profit, margin, ROI, and break-even mean?
Margin on sale is profit divided by the sale price. ROI on cost is profit divided by your item cost. The break-even price is the price at which profit reaches zero, given your inputs.
With the default settings (a $40 price, a $15 cost, and the Professional plan), the referral fee is $6.00 and the plan fee is $0.40, so total fees are $6.40. The buyer pays $33.60 after fees, leaving a profit of $18.60, a margin of 46.5%, and an ROI of 124%. The break-even price is $18.12. The tool also warns when the total fee rate is above 40%.

Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator include FBA fees?
No. The calculator covers the referral fee, the selling plan cost per item, and your profit after item cost. It has no FBA fulfillment fees, so add those separately if they apply to your sale. The Amazon FBA Profit Calculator on this site lets you type them in.
Why should I check the rates myself?
Marketplace rates change. The rates here were read on 2026-10-16 and may have changed since. Check Amazon’s own pricing page before you rely on a result.
Can I enter my own referral rate?
Yes. Type a rate into “Referral fee (%), override” to replace the category table. The tool shows a warning when a typed rate is in use. The “Minimum referral fee ($), override” box works the same way for the minimum.
What does a loss warning mean?
It means your inputs produce a negative profit after fees and your item cost. Review your price, item cost and shipping figures.
Does the total price include shipping?
Yes. The referral fee is worked out on the item price plus the shipping charge you collect from the buyer, and on gift wrap if you add it to shipping. Your own shipping cost is not part of that total.
Is anything I enter uploaded?
No. The tool runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is uploaded.
Do I need an account to use it?
No. The tool is free and needs no sign-up.
